⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: King / Fairy King Harlequin
Age: ~1300
Canon: Seven Deadly Sins
Canon Point: post-Albion arc / Revival of the Testaments episode 5

Background: here!

Personality:

At first glance, one wouldn't think that King was, well, the king of the fairies. As the Grizzly Sin of Sloth, King at least lives up to that name; everything he does casually has a sort of lazy air to it. Unless King's heart is really and truly into something, he appears to be more of a drifting sort. His voice is airy, his language lacks conviction, and more often than not, he comes off as bored about everything around him.

Which couldn't be further from the truth more often than not. One of King's defining traits is how deeply he cares about things, despite what he may say. As an example, when his fellow Sin, Ban, steals children's stuffed animals (because he's Greed, it's a thing, don't ask), King openly berates him for it and cries for the "lost dreams" of the kids, and then goes out of his way to return the animals to their owners at night after Ban has passed out. That's the kind of guy King is at heart — someone who cares a lot and will go out of his way to do what he believes is best without anyone finding out he was responsible.

That's another defining trait of his: taking everything on himself and keeping people at arm's length. Through no fault of his own, he contracted amnesia and left the Fairy King's Forest for centuries, leaving his people and his beloved sister without their king and inadvertantly causing his best friend Helbram to fall into madness. Once he regains his sense of self, King puts the maddened Helbram down and cuts ties with anyone from his past — including his love, Diane — in a bid to keep them safe, blaming himself for everything that had happened. Because of this, King is one to not really let people in. The rest of the Seven Deadly Sins (excluding Meliodas and Merlin) didn't even know what he truly looked like until present day, because he kept up a false appearance when they first banded together.

Which basically means that when he's around strangers, King is likely to keep things casual and not really talk about himself. He'll work with people if they have a common goal in mind but also has no qualms moving on since he's trying not to create any more sentimental attachments. "Detached" and "bored" are two adjectives that fit him — or at least, how King wants to come off, anyway. To most people, he'll initially come off as flippant in some respects. Past experiences have made him somewhat reluctant to open up in any way to humans in particular. His time with the Seven Deadly Sins both ten years ago and recently have done much to thaw that, but there's still a bit of hesitation that lurks within him, keeping his walls up.

That said, when people get closer to King and past his initial barriers, they'll find that he's anything but what he initially portrays himself to be. Sure, he's sleepy and his "sloth" defines his demeanor, but even King has his buttons that anyone can press if they find them, sending him into a flustered state. He also likes to joke around with his friends, just like anyone else would, though he often finds himself at the butt of said jokes (thanks, Ban), and he can be very low-key snarky when he wants to be. And although magically, he's quite powerful, his physical strength is extremely lacking. As Meliodas put it: one time, he fought a cat and the cat won.

Ultimately, King is the voice of reason of the group. He's able to put things into perspective and steer the group back on course after they've gone wildly off it. And though he's not one to immediately leap to murder, he won't hesitate to kill his enemies if the situation calls for it. That doesn't mean that it doesn't affect him, but King will make the "hard choice" for the best possible outcome. However, King does have lines he won't cross, and he won't sacrifice those he cares about — even when certain people put him in a rough position (see: why King had to kill Helbram three times over and it was terrible and he cried a lot and hated everything but went through with it anyway because it was the only way to save Diane and the others and put his friend's soul to rest).

With that said, at heart, King is a kind person who is loyal to his friends and his people, only wanting the best for them — even if the "best for them" means he's not in their lives. He is stupidly self-sacrificing to a fault, but that's only because he cares so deeply about the people he loves most.

Abilities: there's, uh. a lot. To paraphrase all of those blocks of text:

  • Disaster — King's innate power that lets him alter and control things to a degree. This is a drastic oversimplification but Seven Deadly Sins likes to complicate things.

  • Chastiefol — King can combine his power with the "Spirit Spear Chastiefol" to alter it into several different forms. This is primarily how he fights! There are eight different forms (techniques basically) that he utilizes, listed here (under "Spirit Spear Chastiefol"). tl;dr: it's a floating pillow when at rest, but he can turn it into crap like a battle teddy bear or a sunflower that shoots projectiles.

  • Levitation — Because he's a fairy, he has the innate ability to float and fly.

  • Transformation — King can alter his physical appearance, though using this ability takes a lot out of him and requires a great deal of concentration.

Presumably, some of these are nerfed. And though it's listed on his wiki page, King at his current canon point does not have the heart reading ability. In his own words, he's "never been very good at it" and it's speculated that he can't because he's been away from the forest for so long.

Alignment: Peromei. It's a toss up between a few of them, but King is the Grizzly Sin of Sloth because of his perceived negligence. A lot of his actions are shaped by both ends of the spectrum — despair at having to kill his best friend three times over, despair at failing his kind and especially his sister, inklings of hope when Diane, his love, just might remember and even return his feelings — the list goes on. He could honestly fall under Daimonia as well, but Peromei fits him just a bit better, edging it out.

Other:
King would come with Chastiefol!
